This article will provide you with a comprehensive overview of what Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic, led by Dr. Hottum, offers to our community, emphasizing their specialized approach to helping you recover, perform at your best, and stay injury-free.
Chiropractic care is a healthcare discipline focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those affecting the spine and nervous system. These issues can lead to a wide range of problems, from localized pain to impaired movement and reduced athletic performance. What sets Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic apart, as highlighted by glowing patient testimonials, is their specialized focus on sports injuries and performance enhancement. They understand the unique demands placed on an athlete's body and tailor their approach to not only alleviate pain but also to address the underlying biomechanical imbalances that can lead to injuries and hinder performance. The accessibility of Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic is a notable benefit for active New Yorkers. This testimonial underscores the clinic's reputation, indicating that even with typical New York City transit challenges, the value of the care received outweighs the journey. Being in Greenpoint, the clinic is likely well-served by public transportation options, including the G train at Greenpoint Avenue and various bus routes, making it reachable from different parts of the city. This commitment to being a valuable resource, even when a bit of travel is involved, highlights their dedication to providing essential care to the broader New York athletic community.
Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic, led by Dr. Hottum, offers a specialized range of services designed for active individuals, athletes, and anyone looking to recover from injury or enhance their physical performance. Their approach is comprehensive, combining targeted treatment with long-term preventative strategies.
Strategic Sports Injury Rehabilitation: This is a core focus, addressing injuries like sprains, strains, tendonitis (e.g., in knees, elbows, shoulders), and other musculoskeletal issues common among athletes and active individuals. Their aim is not just to heal but to ensure you come back stronger and more resilient, preventing re-injury. They specialize in evidence-based rehab techniques.
Spinal Adjustments and Manipulations: Utilizing precise techniques to improve joint mobility, restore natural movement, reduce inflammation, and enhance nerve function for better muscle coordination. Proper spinal and joint alignment is key to efficient body movement and reducing strain.
Comprehensive Movement Assessments: Before treatment, they conduct thorough assessments to pinpoint weaknesses, imbalances, and underlying movement patterns that may contribute to injury or hinder performance. This allows for highly customized treatment plans.
Customized Treatment Plans for Every Athlete: Recognizing that each individual's body, injury history, and athletic goals are unique, they design personalized programs tailored to your specific activity and objectives. This involves a one-on-one approach for a full hour with the doctor, ensuring dedicated attention.
Hands-On Treatment and Coaching: Beyond adjustments, sessions involve direct, hands-on treatment and coaching to guide your recovery and prevent setbacks. This includes soft tissue therapy and guidance on proper mechanics.
Injury Prevention Strategies: They integrate injury prevention into every treatment plan through postural and movement analysis, identifying hidden imbalances that could put you at risk for future injuries. They take a proactive approach by improving movement quality, correcting muscle imbalances, and reinforcing proper mechanics.
Targeted Pain Relief and Long-Term Solutions: While providing immediate relief from pain, their ultimate goal is long-term relief by addressing the root cause of the discomfort and equipping patients with resources for sustained well-being.
Running Injury Expertise: As evidenced by patient testimonials, they have significant expertise in helping distance runners and those training for events like half marathons, addressing chronic pain issues in hips, groins, and backs to ensure pain-free performance.
Strategic Wellness Counseling: Providing holistic advice that extends beyond immediate injury, including guidance on overall wellness and how to integrate chiropractic care into a healthy lifestyle.
Focused Massage Therapy and Posture Correction: Complementary therapies and advice to improve muscle health, reduce tension, and correct postural imbalances that can impact athletic performance and daily comfort.
Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic stands out in the competitive New York City healthcare scene due to several unique features and strong patient endorsements.
Highly Personalized, One-on-One Care: As one reviewer highlights, "Every session is: One-on-one for a full hour. With the doc. No hand-offs. No assistants." This commitment to undivided attention from Dr. Hottum ensures a deep understanding of your condition and a highly tailored approach, a rarity in many busy city practices.
Deep Expertise in Sports Injury and Performance: Dr. Hottum's background includes "Work with Olympic athletes, national teams, and world champions," along with clinical training in "rehab, strength & conditioning, and sports science." This specialized knowledge directly benefits athletes and active individuals, from weekend warriors to competitive racers.
Results-Oriented and Goal-Driven Programs: The success stories speak volumes. A patient "crossed that finish line in March 2025 pain-free and injury-free" after a 12-week program tailored to running a half marathon. Another distance runner had their "most enjoyable race in years" after a session with Dean. This focus on achieving tangible patient goals is a core strength.
Empowering Patients with Knowledge: Dr. Hottum "knows his stuff and how to explain it clearly." Patients leave with "not only immediate relief, but with the resources necessary for long term relief." This emphasis on education enables patients to be active participants in their recovery and long-term injury prevention.
Addresses Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms: Their philosophy goes beyond quick fixes. They aim to understand "the reason your injury keeps coming back" and "the movement patterns that have gone unchecked for years," ensuring a more sustainable solution to pain and dysfunction.
Comprehensive Approach to Recovery: They integrate injury prevention strategies into every treatment plan, emphasizing not just fixing what's broken but ensuring it doesn't happen again. This includes improving movement quality, correcting muscle imbalances, and reinforcing proper mechanics.
Recognized Value, Despite Travel: The fact that a patient willingly travels "an hour and two subway transfers" highlights the perceived immense value and effectiveness of the care received. This speaks volumes about the quality of service provided.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am so grateful I found Dr. Hottum and Brooklyn Sports Chiropractic! I moved to NYC early 2024 and not long after, injured my back doing a kettlebell swing—years after a lumbar discectomy for a herniated disc. From the very first session, Dean was incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and really took the time to understand what was going on with my body. His approach is both personal and effective—he made me feel heard, gave me a clear plan, and guided me through a 12-week program tailored to my goals and recovery. One of the goals we set together was ambitious and felt crazy at the time: to run a half marathon. I’m thrilled to share that after 12 weeks of working with Dean, I crossed that finish line in March 2025 pain-free and injury-free. I NEVER thought that would be possible just a few months ago! Dean’s care, empowerment, and expertise helped make that possible.Highly recommend to anyone recovering from injury or looking to perform at their best!
Apr 15, 2025 · Sonia TIt takes an hour and two subway transfers to get to Dean's studio but it is worth it every time. As a distance runner still trying to train high mileage and run competitively, I've come to Dean with two separate chronic pain issues (hip and groin). Both times I've left our sessions with not only immediate relief, but with the resources necessary for long term relief. A few weeks out from the 2025 NYC Half, I wasn't sure I'd be able to race, but after a session with Dean, I had my most enjoyable race in years. He knows his stuff and how to explain it clearly. Whether you're dealing with an injury or gearing up for a big training block and want to stay injury-free, I highly recommend booking a session.
May 13, 2025 · David Lukas“Dean will fix you.” That’s what I tell everyone I refer to BKSC. I’ve struggled with lower back and leg issues for years and saw multiple physical therapists, but none were able to get me back to running or doing any kind of high-impact sport—until I found Dean. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and brings a ton of good vibes to every session. I feel stronger and healthier after each session, and more informed about my physical health than ever before.
May 07, 2025 · Kate ChenI came to Dr Hottum with knee pain/stiffness post-ACL/meniscus repair 3 years ago and return to play (rugby) 2 years ago. I also had some lingering shoulder pain. Dr Hottum provided focused, attentive 1-on-1 PT and personalized at home/gym programs that had me feeling better (and importantly, confident) within 1-2 months. He is deeply knowledgeable and cares about his athletes. Come here if you want a dedicated resource (and great office/gym setting) who will listen to you / your body and tailor the recovery framework to your needs.
Jan 07, 2025 · Philip ConstantinouI visited Dean with terrible back pain from a old sports injury— a disc bulge in my lower spin. The pain was so severe I was contemplating back surgery,Over the past 7 weeks, working with him once a week and with weekly homework (only 20mins every 2 days) my back pain has gone from an average of 9/10 to a 2/10, and I’m only 2/3 of the way through this program. Not only do I really appreciate how quickly the change has taken place, but im also grateful to spend time with him, he’s a really decent guy!If you’re suffering with back pain or any kind of mobility issue, I’d thoroughly recommend you see him first!
